尾花さんは、制作の原点として20代、30代と器を作っていた時期があります。
そのなかで、「器」というフォーマットの限界や制約に気づき、次第に機能性を超えた造形の焼き物へと移行していきました。

「器という“使えるもの”の枠組みから離れて、“ただそこにあるもの”としての焼き物を模索したい」

という思いからここ数年は器としての関わりは薄れ、オブジェや抽象造形に寄る傾向が強くなりました。
ここ数年の発表内容を見ると、尾花さんは器としての機能性・用途性を持たせることよりも、「陶芸、やきものそのもの」を素材・形・質感として扱う造形・彫刻的アプローチにシフトしてきました。

昨年当ギャラリーで開催した、尾花友久無垢壺展では、無垢でありながら壺型をした、意識は壺でありながら、用途は満たさない壺を発表しました。
器としての用途性・実用性を主目的とはしておらず、器を「形としての参照点」「経験・技術の底」に置きながら、そこから何を削ぎ落とし、形をどこまで曖昧にできるか、器とオブジェの境界をどう揺らすかという問いを制作の中心に据えながら器に比重を傾けた作品を発表しました。

今年は器というテーマの原点に戻り、彼が若い頃より影響を受けコレクションしてきた古物の器と共に、今できる心地よい器をお届けできると思います。

Obana’s creative journey began in his 20s and 30s, when he made tableware.
During this time, he became aware of the limitations and restrictions of the “tableware” format, and gradually shifted to creating pottery with forms that transcended functionality.

“I want to move away from the framework of tableware as something that can be used, and explore pottery as something that simply exists there.”

In response to this desire, Obana has become less involved with tableware in recent years, and has increasingly focused on objects and abstract sculptures. 

Looking at his presentations over the past few years, Obana has shifted toward a more sculptural approach that treats “ceramics, the pottery itself” as a material, shape, and texture, rather than giving it functionality and utility as a vessel.

At Obana Tomohisa’s exhibition held at wad gallery last year, he presented a pot that was solid yet shaped like a vase, a pot that was a vase but did not fulfill its purpose.

Rather than focusing primarily on utility and practicality as tableware, he places tableware as a “reference point in terms of form” and the “base of his experience and technique,” and has presented works that place an emphasis on tableware, with questions at the heart of his practice as to what can be stripped away from these, to what extent the form can be blurred, and how to blur the boundary between tableware and object.

This year’s exhibition returns to the origins of the theme of tableware, and together with antique tableware that has influenced him and which he has collected since his youth, we hope to present comfortable tableware that is suited to the present day.
